 best ophthalmologist in mumbai

Not done yet, Mottu wants to tell me about guzre zamaane ka villain, Ranjeet. Why him now, I shudder and she says that it’s more about his son, Chiranjeev. Theek hai bolo, I give in reluctantly.

She recalls spotting the two at best ophthalmologist in Mumbai with Dr. HImanshu Mehta’s clinic in juhu the other day and the other patients waiting were raving about Chiranjeev’s handsome looks. Seems they were wondering why he did not give movies a shot instead of pursuing life in the fast lenses of formula one racing.

Apparently, some of those present felt that if people like, Karan Nath, and Jackky Bhagnani could get into the movies, Chiranjeev had a very good chance of making it huge on the big screen, says Mottu. Hmm, I cannot help agreeing with their sentiments. But then, such is life diaries.

EYE TO EYE – DR. HIMANSHU MEHTA

blade free Lasik eye surgery in mumbai
Working in front of a computer for long hours may give you eye problems. Shalvi Manaokar talks to Dr. Himanshu Mehta the best surgeon for femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Mumbai who wanted to tell us more about computer vision syndrome and how you can avoid it.

As computer, iPods’, television, Laptops, etc have become an essential part of our daily lives; it’s safe to say that we are in front of some screen of the other for a good portion of our day, giving our eyes rest only when we finally sleep. But too much time in front of screen can damage our vision. Eye surgeon, Dr. Himanshu Mehta tells us what this damage is all about.

THE PROBLEM

Dr. HImanshu Mehta says, “Computer vision syndrome is a serious problem for millions of people who spend hours in front of computer every day. It occurs due to the constant focus of eyes on a computer for uninterrupted periods of time or long hours. “It’s essential to take a break from whatever you are doing as constantly looking at screen causes our eyes to blink less which leads to dryness along with other severe problems. Your eyes are delicate and extremely sensitive thus they need to be taken care of.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Dr. Himanshu Mehta explains, “With an increased use of computer, especially in air conditioned environments, when you are concentrating on writing or when kids are playing computer games, you tend to blink les.” He adds, “Normally blinking three to four times in a minute is natural and necessary. It’s like a wiper constantly cleaning your car’s windshield. When you don’t blink properly, the tear film – the most important layer of the cornea which allows us crisp and clear vision – gets effected. Because of this you tend to see fully – like rain drops on the windshield. As a result, you may experience itching, burning, redness of the eyes, fatigue, heaviness and stream.”

Dr. HImanshu Mehta warns us to watch out for symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, blurred vision, eye strain, irritation or even redness of eyes.

HOW CAN YOU DEAL WITH IT?

If you are indeed a victim of computer vision syndrome, then Dr. Himanshu Mehta has a few tips on dealing with it. He tells us, “If you have been affected by it, there are ways to combat it.”Do the following if you suffer from the problem:

Consciously blink every few minutes while working on a computer.
Change your gaze occasionally.
Take breaks after intervals when you are working on the computer at a stretch.
Do not sit facing the direction that the air conditioner blows.
Change your posture frequently.
Use the correct or prescribed glasses.
Reduce the contrast and brightness setting of your computers display.
Use eye lubricant drops if required.
Do not use antibiotic or steroid eye drops without the prescription of an expert eye specialist.

Remember to keep your computer usage limited and instead of suffering games or checking face book all the time, lie down and give your eyes break.

Wanna Make Your Brown Eyes Blue?

femtosecond laser cataract surgery in mumbai

Colored lenses are increasingly popular these days. Lisa Antao tells what need to know about them, before you succumb to the banwagon effect:

Yes, sporting colored lenses have certainly become a rage these days, especially amongst the youth, with girls wanting to imitate Lady Gaga’s outrageous and flamboyant fashion sense. However, in these attempts to dazzle others with their string eyes, eye – safety is often pushed to the back burner as the focus only lies on the getting ‘the look’ right. Ideally, this should not be happening because your eyes are on of the most delicate organs in the body.

Types of colored Lenses

Colored lenses are mainly used for enhancing ones cosmetic appeal. And this is purely a matter of personal choice and you can vary upon how dramatic you want the effect to be.

Ophthalmologist Dr Himanshu Mehta the best surgeon of femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Mumbai who says, “These days there are a variety of lenses in terms of longevity to choose from. Longer lasting ones can be used for up to 180 days, if you are regular with your lens care regime. Also, single use, disposable lenses are available now. Such lenses are ideal if you are going to use them only on special accusation and not on a regular basis.” She explains that there are four types of colored contact lens:

Visibility Tints: They simple add a green or blue hue to your original color and are used with corrective lenses to improve clarity of vision.
Enhancement Tints: They deepen the color of natural eyes and are useful if you want to bring about a subtle change in your appearance without shocking your friends and family.
Light – Filtering Tints: They highlight certain colors by muting the others and are used by sports – persons and audiences to see the ball or bat better.
Opaque Color Tints: These are the other variety theatrical or costume lenses, which lend ‘unnatural’ colors to the user’s eyes. They are quite popular at fancy dress parties or with people who have a really quirky fashion sense.

When not to wear them?

Dr Himanshu Mehta (ophthalmologist) the specialist of femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Mumbai at vision eye center. He says “when one gets an eye infection, be it conjunctivitis, redness of eyes, ulcer, dryness, or when one has undergone an eye surgery and even when eye waters or there is irritation in the eyes, it is advisable not to wear contact lenses.” And what does one do if they develop lens? He advises, “Firstly, remove the lenses. Don’t put steroid eye drops. Instead, put lubricating or antibiotic eye drops. One should not be in a great hurry to re wear contact lenses.”

For how long should one wear them?

Ophthalmic surgeon Dr Keiki Mehta Says, “It is perfectly safe to wear colored lenses provided you had them fitted properly and you eye has been assessed by a competent doctor. All colored lenses are fitted a bit tight to prevent the ‘wobble’ which makes them noticeable, and hence usually full day wear is not recommended. The ability of the eye to tolerate soft contact lenses depends on oxygen transmission through the substance of the lens. The colored pigment tends to decrease the transmission and hence after long hours of wearing, the eye goes red and the vessels stand out. Ideally, one can wear colored lenses for six hours, clean and rehydrate them for 20 minutes and you can wear them again for another six hours.”

Precautions

Dr Keiki syas that people who have allergy or recurrent eye infections should be careful never to exceed their times. One must be particularly careful if He/she works in dirty, dusty or smoky environments as they eye can get irritated easily and contact lenses will make matters worse. Tiny foreign matter like send or dirt can scratch your cornea and lead to a nasty infections. Also, if one is a diabetic, one must be very careful. If a problem occurs and the eyes become red and inflamed, especially if a white spot appears on the clear cornea, please see a doctor immediately. It may spoil your vision. Contact lenses are great fun. Use them, but responsibility.

But the case of two months old Ethan from Ethiopia is unusual. According to published international research papers, in about 0.4 percent of all births, congenital cataracts are found or soon develop.

Ethan’s father Muktar Omar travelled all the way to Mumbai when he learnt that his sun suffers from bilateral congenital cataract and had no vision. “We were unable to find doctors in Ethiopia who could perform the surgery under anaesthesia on a small baby,” said omar, who had stayed in Mumbai a few years ago. “I checked online and found that this operation could be easily done here, “he said.
Dr Himanshu Mehta, consultant ophthalmologist at Lilawati hospital, who performed the surgery on Ethan, said that it is unusual to conduct cataract surgery on small children. “There was no complication during the surgery under anaesthesia, which is a little difficult on a two month old. We do not generally get patients this young.”

However, doctors remain divided on the issue of rarity of the case. Dr Ragini parekh, head of ophthalmology at JJ Hospital, said that she has dealt with a lot of cataract cases of children with cataract. A child may suffer from congenital cataract because of maternal diabetes, malnutrition, endocrine problems or infection in the mother, “she said, adding that administering general anaesthesia and performing a surgery in both the eyes in one go is indeed a problem, as the child may be rendered blind in the other eye.

However, Ethan’s parents are happy. “Doctors say that he will be able to see now once his bandages are removed, we only want our child to be normal and see the world,” said Omar, who is set to fly to Ethiopia next Friday.

Although Ethan’s cataract has been removed, but to have a normal vision sans complication will take some time. A senior ophthalmologist said, “Surgeries on such young patients require highly specialized skills. Only a pediatric ophthalmology surgeon does it. In this case only the cataract has been removed as of now. There will be a follow up and after around two years, the baby will be examined again for lenses and glasses.

femtosecond laser cataract surgery in mumbai

Winter brings along with it dry skin and eye problems. Shalvi Mangaokar speaks to Dr. Himashu Mehta to find out more:

We may all be rejoicing thanks to the shift in weather, even if it is just marginal. But some of the changes that accompany the cooler weather might be harmful for our eyes. Most people think that is only necessary to protect their eyes from the sun during the summer. But the suns influence does not diminish during the rest of the eyes, so your eyes need to be protected during the winter months too. Eye surgeon at the Vission Eye center, to find out more about the eye problems and femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Mumbai With Dr Himanshu Mehta's expertise. Mostly we don't care about eye at winter session which is really bad to eye.

WINTER WIND CHANGES

Even the smallest things can cause major damage. Dr. HImanshu Mehta says, “Because of the wedding and festive season, there is lot of makeup and cosmetic usage which can be potentially harmful if not taken care of.

He adds that the climate in December often causes dry eyes even and even infections. Dr. HImanshu Mehta adds, “People who are prone to dryness, allergies and seasonal changes are affected the most. During the festive season, many of us are so caught up in the festivities that our diet and sleep patterns go for a toss. This lowers your immunity, which makes you more prone to infections, including eye infections and allergies.”

EYE SPY PROBLEMS

Often, people don’t take eye infections seriously. Dr. Himanshu Mehta says, “if you try self medication or don’t take enough care of your eyes, it can be dangerous. The sun is not the only eye hazard. Winters cool winds and drier air can irritate the eyes as well.”

Redness, burning, irritation, watering, swelling, pain and reduced or blurred vision as well as headaches and a gritty sensation are the most common symptoms of eye problems. So the next time any of this occurs, make sure you head to your doctor.

PREVENT IT

Dr. Himanshu syas that prevention is the best cure “take care of your lenses and cosmetic. Don’t put unnecessary antibiotics or steroid drops in your eyes. Wear glares when out in the sun and in polluted areas. Maintain good standers of personal hygiene and splash water on your eyes to keep them clean. However, don’t splash a lot of hot water.

Also, don’t rub your eyes with dirty hands.” Dr. Himanshu Mehta denounces self medication. In case of a problem, visiting a doctor is the best way out. Winters are not just about skin care. Our eyes matter too. “don’t take them for granted. Take a little more care of your eyes than your car,” he concludes.

An Eye for Perfection - Dr Himanshu Mehta

femtosecond laser cataract surgery in mumbai

Dr Himashu Mehta Eye Surgeon gives us an inside view of what it took him to be wellknown in the Eye field

I have been practicing for the last fourteen years and I have my clinic The vision Eye Center at Juhu Mumbai. Going back to my college days is very nostalgic indeed.

When I opted for this profession, it was very competitive and growing. It was really very difficult to get into a medical college. It is a great serving people and this is one of the reasons I choose to become a doctor, it is worth it.

I want to jai hind college for my plus two classes and I then went to study medicine in 1979 at KEM and GS Medical College. It was an experience I will never forget. There was so much of learning involved. I have specialized in ophthalmology. I have done my super specialty training in ophthalmology from Houston, Texas in the United State.

In order to become further qualified, I engaged in a fellowship in vitreo-Retinal surgery with Dr. Charles A. Gracia, Director Retine services at memorial hermonn hospital in Houston, Texas. I have also been involved in some of the early studies in excimer laser in 1991 with Dr. warren cross in the United state.

My area of interest is Blade free cataract surgery and Phaco-Emulsification surgery and vitreo- Retinal surgery. I have done more than 5000 thousands surgery. I have operated some of the oldest living patients around the age of 103 and 105 years and have successfully restored their sight. I am skilled to perform the most complicated cases from cataract surgery to Lasik surgery to retinal detachment surgery. I endeavor to reduce blindness due to diabetes and I am involved in patient education and treatment for the same.

My expertise includes – when i started my career for femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Mumbai and many other field like conductive  Kerlatoplasty, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Detachment, Retinopathy of prematurity and squint removal going back to my college days, my profession was very knowledgeable and helpful. I still remember many of them, including proof. M L Kothari who was a great orator and a brilliant teacher. He was also a great reader who thought us the importance of reading more books so we can be always powered by knowledge. Our professors enriched us a great deal.

Studies were definitely not easy! All over five years were very tough and you have to be always on your toes and study hard. The first year is itself like a revelation towards a new field and the third years in MBBS is the toughest. You really have to pull your socks to sail through. Anyway, tough times never last but tough people do.

Our social life and the meaning of fun in those days were very different. We did not have hi end coffee shops or malls and eateries to visit. We used to have lot of interactive chat sessions among ourselves and we used to go for picnics. We used to have fun in this way. Those were simple days but we bonded very well and enjoyed qualitative time together.

Apart from the canteen in KEM College, there is a special place called Katta. All former students of this college can relateto this lovely place. We used to have our meetings there. the added advantage was that from that place you could view the corridor too.

The GS Medical College has this very British architecture and it is more than 100 years old. It looks great and very impressive. It was visually appealing and I used to feel a sense of pride in studying there.

The first day of college was well... let me say, I have butterflies in my stomach. Like other students I also faced ragging, but it was not so serious then and was more of fun. I still remember after that we had a lecture by Dr Bhatnagar who spoke on a doctor’s ethics, responsibilities and duties. Yes indeed the first day memories are still fresh in my mind. It was the start of a new ara and a new life for me.
Embarrassing moments? Oh, there were lost1 especially when we have to give a presentation on different organs in the class and when our professors also used to confuse us. They could also gauge our real caliber through this. Once I gave a speech on a particular organ but spoke the futures of another. It was really embarrassing but then on realizing my mistake I was fortunately given a second chance.

According me education and practical knowledge are both very important. You cannot compromise either and you should not. There can be no practical knowledge without education in this line. Also when you have the education. You have to perfect that skill through practical knowledge. In a profession like mine we have to be particular about the precision with which we function and have to be right the very first time. One wrong move and the patient can lose his or her eyesight. We have to be extremely careful.

For those who want to enter this profession, I will advise them that total dedication towards the profession is a must. It involves a lot of hard work, patience and a tremendous sense of responsibility. One must remember we are involved with human lives and the patients trust us totally. The medical line involves long working hours and lots of studies and many years of your life. So one must be prepared for though task.

One must also continuously upgrade ones knowledge and expertise. The field is growing and new discoveries and techniques are coming up. One needs to be in touch with the latest in the field.
