All You Wanted To Know About Lasik

Your eyes are among the most important organs of your body. Today, thanks to huge strides in medical technology, all sports of eye problems can be rectified. Here, Dr Himanshu Mehta answers questions about LASIK and other types of eye-related procedures.

What are conventional LASIK, Blade Free Lasik (BFL), Epi-LASIK and PRK?

Blade free Lasik (BFL) is the use of fem to second laser to create a thin 100u corneal flap without using a blade-assisted mechanical microkeratome as in conventional LASIK. This results in safety, consistency, accuracy, predictability and reliability. However, with BFL and newer generation microkeratomes, regular and customized LASIK results also give excellent results. The treatment meets all expectations and boasts of rapid mobilization i.e. minimal downtime and consistent good results, which are the hallmark of LASIK. In Epi-LASIK and PRK, the corneal flap is not made and laser is performed after removing the epithelium or the top 30-40u of the cornea.

Is LASIK safe? Does the procedure hurt?

A lot of people fear about Lasik eye surgery in Mumbai that they said it is huge painful and that they will get their number back after some time. People also want to know whether LASIK is possible for people who have plus numbers or if they are in the 45-55 age bracket, and have distance and near numbers. To all these queries, I’d like to say that LASIK is extremely safe thanks to all the newer generation machines. There is minimal pain and no injection, stitches or lens insertion. In fact, it is less painfull than going to the beauty parlour! Once you undergo the procedure, there are very low chances of a number coming back.

Hypermetropes or people with plus numbers are most happy once they undergo this procedure. LASIK is definitely possible for bifocal numbers i.e. for people above 45 who have distance and near numbers.
