Many youngsters ignore or refuse to accept that they have vision problems. “Even after I got it checked I never used to wear my glasses. I started suffering from headaches and subsequent check up revealed that my condition has worsened, after that I started wearing my spectacles, “adds day.

She is not alone. Lekha Puri, a 30 years old project manager, is saddened by the thought that her face never be the same after donning spectacles. The computer screen might be blur I would prefer to rewind to a time when I did not know that I needed vision correction. I was having difficulties reading things but I put off going to a doctor for quite some time.”

However, Rajesh Narad, GM of Gangar Opticians says that in the past few years he has seen a change in people’s attitude towards wearing glasses. “Earlier would shy away from wearing glasses says Dr Himanshu Mehta the specialist of bladeless cataract eye surgery in Mumbai at the Vission Eye Center Juhu. Dr. Ghorpade blames lack of knowledge among people for the vision problems. “Lack of discipline, excessively cajoling parents and availability of variety of options which are not ideally suited for health including diet and entertainment are reason for the various eye problems in today’s youth.

He adds, if anyone experience symptoms like visual disturbance, watering, redness and eye irritation, one must visit an ophthalmologist.” And who would age more than 25 years old Pritu hait, a senior account executive, who has been wearing glasses since the age of 11. “as an 11 years old kid I use to be glued to the television almost through the day. Initially I started experiencing eye strain, headaches, blurred vision and other visual symptoms. The power of my spectacles kept on increasing as I grew older.”

Dr. HImanshu Mehta wants people to not wait for the symptoms to show, but to visit a doctor at least once in a year. “Every child, even as young as five years of age, should visit an ophthalmologist. And if one has family history then it is even more important.”

Six out of 10 children have vision problems, yes you read it right. So don’t rub your eyes, visit an ophthalmologist.

For your eyes

• Eat lots of greens leafy and red colored vegetables

• Avoid any activity that will strain your eyes

• Blink eyes more and replenish eyes with lubricants. Take 5 minute break by looking at a       distance while using the pc. Anti-reflective coated glasses are a good idea

• Get adequate sleep and drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily

• Visit your ophthalmologist if there is blurring, redness, discharge or foreign body sensation

• If glasses are prescribed, always wear them and try polycarbonate glasses for children. These glasses do not crack or break easily

What is Glaucoma (kala pani jamar)?

Normal eye pressure is between 14-20 mm of hg. If pressure increases, it results in loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision and blindness.

Sign and symptoms of Glaucoma?

Generally in early stages there are no ‘symptoms’. One may not notice a car passing from the side as they lose their peripheral vision.

In an acute attack – the patient may get severe eye pain, headache, vomiting and fuzzy vision.

Is there any way to prevent Glaucoma?

No, there is no way to prevent primary Glaucoma. Early detection followed by timely medical or surgical line of
treatment is the only way to avoid irreversible loss of vision.

Is Glaucoma curable?

Glaucoma is not curable but controllable. There has been excellent medical advancement for treating Glaucoma. If the patient, losing their eyes is an impossibility now. Laser trabeculoplasty, iredectomy and in a rare events trabeculectomy surgery are excellent time tested techniques.

Important:

What are the symptoms of ARMD?

Both dry ARMD: The most common early sign is blurred vision.

For Wet ARMD:  The classic early symptoms are that straight lines appear crooked.

How ARMD is detected?

ARMD is detected during a comprehensive eye exam that includes:

1. Visual acuity test & Amslers grid

2. Dilated eye exam

3. Fluoresce Angiogram

4. OCT

The most important is amsler Grid. The pattern of the grid resembles a checkerboard. You will cover one eye and stare at a black dot in the center of the grid. While staring at the dot, you may notice that the straight lines in the pattern appear wavy. You may notice that some of the lines are missing. These may be signs of ARMD.

How is wet ARMD treated?

Wet ARMD can be treated with vitamins, diet, Laser surgery, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and injections into the eyes. The injections of anit-VEGF therapy have been proven effective. These injections are completely non-painful.

How is dry ARMD treated?

Once dry ARMD reaches advanced stage, no form of treatment can prevent vision loss. However, treatment can delay and possibly prevent intermediate ARMD from progressing to the advanced stage in which vision loss occurs.

The real fact is nobody becomes blind. They may significant central loss of vision.

Ethiopian Baby Undergoes Cataract Surgery in Mumbai City

Mumbai: Soon, two month old Ethan will be able to recognize his mother buy her face. Unlike other children his age, this boy from Ethiopia was not able to see the world as he was suffering from cataract in both the eyes. But with Ethan undergoing a surgery, he will be able to see everything.

It was only 20 days ago that Mukhtar Omar, a seaman, realized that his son could that the baby was suffering from bilateral congenital cataract. “we could not find any doctor there who could perform Bladeless cataract eye surgery in Mumbai under anesthesia on such a small baby,” said Omar, who had stayed in Mumbai a few years ago. “I checked online and found this operation could be done quite easily here at Vission Eye Center Juhu Mumbai, “said Omar.
